BECOMING A CITIZEN  Two ways to become a citizen  Birth  Naturalization  To be Naturalized, a person must go through several steps.  You must take a test on US History, US government, be able to read, write, and speak English.

CITIZENSHIP  The 14 th Amendment defines what a citizen is.  Immigration and naturalization have led to a more “diverse” population.

RIGHTS/FREEDOMS OF CITIZENS  As citizens of the US, you are promised several things. The promises of the government are called your rights.  These rights are laid out in the Constitution(mainly in the Bill of Rights and other amendments).

RIGHTS/FREEDOMS OF CITIZENS  Some of the rights promised in the Bill of Rights are  1 st Amendment(the five freedoms)  Freedom of Religion  Freedom of Speech  Freedom of Press  Freedom of Assembly  Freedom to Petition 5 th Amendment-Due Process

FREEDOMS CONTINUED  The 5 th amendment promises us due process from the national government.  The 14 th Amendment extends due process to the states  It tells the states they have to give you the rights promised in the US Constitution

DUTIES  In exchange for all the rights you have been given by the government, you are expected to complete your duties in return.  Failure to do your duty could mean going to jail.  Duties of Citizens:  Obey the laws  Pay taxes  Serve on a jury if selected  Serve in the military if called upon

RESPONSIBILITIES  Citizens also have responsibilities.  Responsibilities are not required, they are voluntary(things you should do).  Voting  Holding elective office  Communicating with the government  Participate in politics  Stay informed  Respect the rights of others

COMMUNITY SERVICE  In order for our country to work well, people need to be involved in their communities.  Ways you can get involved in community service  Volunteer  Express your concerns about your community  Work with others to make your community a better place to live.
