Promoting a Healthy Lifestyle

If someone asks you whether you are healthy or not, how would you answer? Health= You have to balance physical, mental/emotional, and social aspects of your life. Wellness = an overall state of well-being, or total health. - Decision making - practiced behaviors - Lifelong commitments

The continuum shows that your health can be measured on a sliding scale with many degrees of health. Name 3 behaviors that would help you move toward the right side of the continuum.

Wellness and Prevention With wellness comes prevention which is… – Practicing health and safety habits to remain free of disease and injury. -Safety Belts (Seat belts reduce serious crash-related injuries and deaths by about 50%) -Applying sunscreen (One person dies of melanoma every hour (every 57 minutes)). -No drinking and driving(there were 10,839 fatalities in crashes involving a driver with a BAC of.08 or higher – 32 percent of total traffic fatalities for the year)

Lifestyle Factors Getting 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night Starting each day with a healthy breakfast Eating a variety of nutritious foods each day Physical activity for at least 20 minutes a day, 3 or more times a week Maintaining a healthy weight Avoiding tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs Abstaining from sexual activity Managing stress Maintaining positive relationships Practicing safe behaviors to prevent injury.

Right Now Create this chart on a sheet of paper. The Food we eat -On the chart, list as many things as you can remember that you have eaten in the past week. -You need to list AT LEAST 10 items - If you haven’t had take out/fast food, list something you have had for dinner

Your Health Triangle The three elements of Health are interconnected. When one side receives too much or too little attention, the who triangle can become lopsided and unbalanced.

Physical Health With how well your body functions. With good health you… – Perform daily life activities better – Cope with everyday challenges and stresses – Resist disease – Avoid injury

Mental/ Health Your feelings about yourself, how well you meet demands of daily life and ability to process information. – Enjoy challenges – Like learning new things – See mistakes as opportunities – Turning negatives into positives

Social Health The way you get along with others – Your ability to make and keep friends – To work and play in cooperative ways – Seeking and lending support when necessary – Communicating well – Showing respect and care for yourself and others – Perception is reality

Social Environment Includes family and other people with whom you come into contact with daily. As a teen, an important part of your social environment is your peers. Peers are people of the same age who share similar interests. – Friends – Classmates Peers can have positive effects on your or take part in unhealthy behaviors which can pressure you to become “part of the group.”

Other Aspects of Health Emotional – recognizing feelings and expressing them appropriately. Spiritual – Beliefs and values; ways of peace of mind Sexual – acceptance of one’s own sexuality Societal – The way individuals are treated within a society Environmental – standard in which individuals live (housing, sanitation, etc)

Your Behavior and Reducing Risks Risk behaviors are actions that can potentially threaten your health or the health of others. CDC and other public health agencies routinely survey teens nationwide to monitor their risk behaviors. s_drug_trend_yrbs.pdf s_drug_trend_yrbs.pdf
