Complex Sentences Standard ELACC7L1: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. a. Explain the function of phrases and clauses in general and their function in specific sentences. (DOK 2) b. Choose among simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences to signal differing relationships among ideas. (DOK 1) c. Place phrases and clauses within a sentence, recognizing and correcting misplaced and dangling modifiers. (DOK 1)

Complex Sentences A complex sentence contains one independent clause and at least one subordinate clause. There are 2 kinds of subordinate clauses: adjective and adverb clauses.

Complex Sentences Adjective Clause An adjective clause usually begin with relative pronouns such as: who, whom, whose, which, and that. Example: Andrew Johnson, who served as President of Yeager’s Student Council, is writing a screenplay.

Complex Sentences Adverb Clause Adverb clauses begins with subordinate conjunctions such as: after, as, because, if, since, and when. Example: When I hear whistling, I think of Chris Jones.

Complex Sentences Two Adjective Clauses One interesting annual event that is held at Yeager Middles School is Career Day, which involves many opportunities for students to learn about different careers. Where are the 2 adjective clauses.

Complex Sentences Let’s Practice Helen Keller as a child. Underline the adjective or adverb clauses. Helen Keller, who is shown in the photograph below, became very ill as a small child. After she recovered from the illness, she could no longer see or hear. Because she could not hear, she also lost her ability to speak. Helen’s parents asked Alexander Graham Bell, who trained teachers of people with hearing impairments, for his advices about the child’s education. Helen Keller as a child.
