Learning Objectives By the end of this lesson pupils should: Understand the terms: - resting heart rate - working heart rate - maximum heart rate - recovery rate Be able to use graphs to explain the use of target zones and thresholds of training

Why analyse training sessions? Analysing training sessions lets us monitor ability and improvements. Without analysis it would be impossible to know whether the training has benefitted us.

Types of Heart Rate Heart rate is… Resting heart rate is… Working heart rate is… Maximum heart rate is… Recovery rate is…

Types of Heart Rate Heart rate is… the number of times the heart beats per minute (bpm) Resting heart rate is… the heart rate at rest (usually bpm) Working heart rate is… the heart rate during (or immediately after) exercise Maximum heart rate is… your age = maximum heart rate (bpm) Recovery rate is… how long it takes for heart rate to return to its resting level after training

Resting Heart Rate Resting heart rate is the heart at rest. This is best measured first thing in the morning. It is normally between bpm. Take heart rate for a minute using the radial pulse. This is your resting heart rate!

Maximum Heart Rate (MHR) Maximum heart rate is calculate according to a person’s age: your age = MHR For example: = 204 bpm

Target Zone Maximum heart rate means our heart is working at it’s maximum (100%) Target zone is when a person is working at between 60-80% of the maximum heart rate. How can this be worked out?

Target Zone Our target zone has thresholds (boundaries), the upper threshold and the lower threshold. These thresholds can be worked out by: - dividing our MHR by multiplying by 60 for lower threshold - multiplying by 80 for upper threshold
