An alternative viewpoint The story is told in the first person, by the man who commits the murder. Look at the story from a different viewpoint – as though you are one of the three police officers. For each extract, discuss what the police officers would notice and what they think.
Extract 1 I smiled, for what had I to fear? I bade the gentlemen welcome. The shriek, I said, was my own in a dream.
Extract 2 I led them at length to his chamber. I showed them his treasures, secure, undisturbed.
Extract 3 They sat, and while I answered cheerily, they chatted of familiar things.
Extract 4 No doubt I now grew very pale – but I talked more fluently, and with a heightened voice.
Extract 5 It grew louder – louder – louder! And still the men chatted pleasantly, and smiled.
Extract 6 I admit the deed! – Tear up the planks!
