Map of the Missions

Introduction to San Luis Obispo de Tolosa n Fifth Mission n Founded: Sept.1, 1772 by Father Junipero Serra n Named after Saint Luis, Bishop of Touluse n Located in the city of San Luis Obispo, near the coast to establish towns, and to be able to trade with ships.

History n Marks the halfway point in the chain of missions. n Sold in 1845 for $510 n Returned to church in 1859 n Remodeled in 1868 n Restored to earlier appearance in 1934

Life n Located in “Valley of Bears”.This area was heavily populated by bears. This allowed them to hunt bears and send the meat to other missionaries to keep them from starving. n Some of the natives were not happy about the settlement of the mission, so they would shoot burning arrows into the dry buildings that would cause great damage. n The missionaries began to make red clay like tiles that were waterproof and fireproof. These tiles are used throughout California today.

Conclusion n San Luis Obispo de Tolosa was founded in Sept.1,1772 by Father Junipero Serra n The great city of San Luis Obispo exists because of this! n This mission marks the halfway point of all of the missions in the chain. n Designed red clay tiles that are used today.

Comprehension Questions n When was this mission founded? n Who founded this mission? n In what city is this mission located? n Why were the missions built near the coast? n Who was this mission named after? n What did the missionaries hunt at this particular mission? n What did the missionaries make that we use today?
