 A work of art can be thought of as a system.  A system is a set of parts that are combined to create a whole.  The following are systems:

 The parts of a system are interrelated.  When one part changes, the whole changes.  If you change the words in a song … is it the same song?  If you change the colors in a painting … is it the same painting?

 A work of art can be thought of as a system in which all the elements create a composition or design.  The design creates a visual unity using the Principles of Art.  Analyze the artwork by describing how the artist used the principles to create the design.

 Repetition  Variety  Emphasis  Balance  Rhythm  Contrast  Movement  Proportion

 What is the theme, or underlying meaning of the work?  The theme and the subject are not necessarily the same thing.  The theme is the meaning and the subject includes all the objects you see in the work.

But what is the theme?

 Courage facing death

 What is the artworks intended purpose? Realism Emotionalism Formalism

 Was the work of art successful in being realistic, evoking emotion, or creating a well organized design?

 Step 1 - Describe the Elements  Step 2 – Analyze the Design Principles  Step 3 – Think about the Meaning  Step 4 – Define the Purpose  Step 5 - Was it successful?  Step 6 - Do you like it or not?
