Run Off Water. Run off water is a result of water not being able to be absorbed by the surface of the ground. Gravity pulls the run off water along the ground until it hits a low point or finds a stream. Heavy rainfall = quick saturation and increased run off. Long period of rain has the same result as a heavy rainfall Steeper land = faster flow of water, less absorption, & more run off Low, gently rolling lands = slower moving water, more absorption, & less run off. Little vegetation = greater amount of run off water.
Tracking Run Off Natural vents & human activities can affect run off & cause problems Too much run off = rivers flood, flooding = washing away important soil Fast moving rivers = large amount of fine sand & silt, harming fish & other aquatic animals
Drainage Precipitation falls = works way into common river = drainage basin Falling water = flows into streams from drainage basins River systems are similar to trees
Ground Water Rocks with large pores allow lots of water to flow through Rocks with smaller pores allow less flow of ground water A well = man made hole in the ground that is very deep & goes pass the water table ¼ people in British Columbia get their water from a producing well
Glaciers Glaciers = snow & ice 2/3 of the worlds fresh water comes from glaciers Many years = snow gets very deep Glaciers covered most of northern parts of British Columbia Water normally = flowing through rivers = frozen in water Two types of glaciers = Alpine glaciers or continental glaciers Two of largest ice sheets on earth = found in Antarctica Glaciers will slide down a slope Big chunks of ice = icebergs Glaciers in British Columbia are receding
