Canadian Poets Research Project

Project Snapshot Grades: 20/30 or AP/IB Secondary Research-based project Critical Thinking and Presentation Skills: Research  Analysis  Visual Representation  Oral Presentation  Reflection

Project Goals: 1.Students will glean an appreciation for Canadian poets and topics of repression, independence, equality, freedom and identity. 2.Students will analyze, compare and contrast central themes and uses of figurative language in female Canadian poetry selections. 3.Students will use research skills to analyze female Canadian poets.

Focused Themes Freedom Identity Equality Repression Independence

Project Process Research Using the website resource, students will research Canadian poets Reading and selecting two or three Canadian Poems Analysis Analyzing poems with a focus on specified themes Writing a compare/contrast essay + Creating a Visual Prezi Presentation analyzing the poems using excerpts, images Presentation 3-5 minute presentation of poem analysis Written essay submitted for feedback; revision permitted for second submission; peer feedback from presentation

Research Step 1 – Students consult the “starting point” websites (see end of document) Step 2 – Students browse information and resources on selected Canadian poets and select two or three poems to focus their research on Step 3 – Students consult additional supplementary resources/links based around their selected poets’ poems Step 4 – Students identify and obtain key research information required for the essay/presentation

Analysis Step 1 – Students will analyze their selected poems Step 2 – Students identify motifs/parallel themes in poems; compare/contrast; map out essay Step 3 – Students write research essay Step 4 – Students create a visual complementary Prezi for their essay to share with the class – LINK:

Presentation Step 1 a)Students Introduce their topic and authors by providing: biographical information; poem information/significance; theme identification; excerpt quotation analysis; personal favourites b ) Students navigate through the Prezi presentation Step 2 – Students respond to questions regarding their presentation Step 3 – Students receive peer feedback and complete a personal reflection based on their thoughts of the overall presentation
