EQ: What are the origins and opinions of Sexual Orientation

Bell ringer  What percentage of men and women do you think are gay and lesbian? Write statement and answer yes/no to the following questions and explain why you think this  Homosexuality is linked with problems in a child’s relationship with parents?  Homosexuality involves a fear or hatred of the other sex  Sexual orientation is linked to level of hormones in the body

Statistics  People usually guess 20-25% men and women are homosexual  4% of men and 2% of women are homosexual

Mental illness???  American psychiatric assoc. dropped homosexuality from list of mental illnesses in 1973  World Health organization-1993  Japan-1995  China-2001

Why are people LBGT?  All BR questions-not causes  Biological (nature) correlates most- tentative findings Brain differences:  Hypothalamic cell cluster larger in straight men  Anterior commissure is larger in gay men

Genetic influences:  Homosexuality higher among identical twins than fraternal Prenatal hormonal influences o Atypical exposure of prenatal hormones

Have attitudes toward LGBT changed over time? Politics:  Harvey Milk : became one of the first openly gay officials in the United States in 1977, when he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.
