Falter -- verb To hesitate or move unsteadily The team lost the game because their confidence faltered in the ninth inning.

Despondent – adj. Feeling hopeless; low in spirit The wife was despondent after the death of her husband.

Oppressive – adj. Weighing heavily on the senses or spirit The 102 degree heat became oppressive after being outside for two hours.

Awe -- noun An extreme feeling of admiration or wonder The crowd stood in awe of the fireworks display.

Elaborate – adj (not the verb!) Detailed and complicated in design The team played an elaborate hoax on their coach that required the whole school to take part.
