Protein synthesis pt 2: Translation
MRNA strand exits the nucleus and attaches itself to a ribosome The initiator codon turns on protein synthesis Sequence of nucleotides determines which amino acid is attached to the ribosome Amino acid brought to the ribosome by tRNA Each tRNA has a specific amino acid and a specific anticodon which is the opposite code of the mRNA
Only the tRNA which contains the correct anticodon can attach itself to the ribosome containing the mRNA and deposit its amino acid
Translation continues untill the terminator or stop codon is reached Then both thr mRNA and the protein are released from the ribosome and translation is complete Some proteins can be extremely large, or may be needed in large quantities Therefor, mRNA weaves through many ribosomes at once Multiple ribosomes joined by mRNA strand are called polysomes
