Lab Safety Symbols

You see symbols all around you You see symbols all around you. You knew the answers immediately what they meant. That’s because symbols convey (give) a lot of information in a split second. Symbols are used in science labs, too. They are used to caution us against accidents and harm. These symbols need to be simple so that we can understand their meanings in a split second.

The following are safety symbols used in businesses around the world The following are safety symbols used in businesses around the world. What are the cautions that they convey? (Just share your ideas aloud for 2 minutes only. Use the clock on your computer to time yourselves. These symbols will NOT be on your upcoming test; Ms. Tresten just wants you to see how easy it is to interpret good safety symbols.) Lab apron - wear to protect your clothing and skin from damage Safety goggles: always wear safety goggles to protect your eyes in activities involving chemicals, flames, heating, or with the possibility of broken glass Lab apron - wear to protect your clothing and skin from damage

Breakage - you are materials that may be breakable. Handle with care. Heat-resistant gloves - use oven mitt or other hand protection when handling hot materials. Do not use bare hands.

Heating: use clamps or tongs to pick up hot glassware Sharp object - you will be using sharp tools such as needles, scalpels, or scissors. Sharp edge should be pointed away from yourself and others.

Disconnect when not in use. Electric shock - avoid the possibility of electric shock. Never use electrical equipment around water or with wet hands. Disconnect when not in use. Poison- do not ingest. Do not inhale. Wash hands when done with activity

When asked to test an odor, use wafting motion. Physical safety - May involve physical activity. Take precautions to avoid injury. Follow teacher instructions. Fumes - poisonous or unpleasant vapors may be involved. Work in ventilated area. When asked to test an odor, use wafting motion.

Flames - during lab, you may be working with flames from a candle, burner, or match. Tie back loose hair and clothing. No flames- flammable materials may be present. Make sure there are not flames or sparks present.

Hand washing - wash hands thoroughly when finished with activity. Disposal - chemicals and other lab materials used in activity must be disposed of safely. Follow teacher instructions. Hand washing - wash hands thoroughly when finished with activity.

Corrosive chemical - you are working with General Safety Awareness - you may see this symbol when none of the other symbols are present. Read and follow specific instructions. Corrosive chemical - you are working with an acid or another corrosive chemical. Do not inhale. Wash hands when done.

What does this symbol tell you? We know if you drop something that is glass in class, the first thing you should do is tell the teacher. What should you do if you get your lab supplies and notice a beaker is chipped? If Tell the teacher!

Safety Symbols Drag & Drop Review Directions: Press the ESC key on your keyboard (only if this PPT is saved to the computer). Drag and drop the symbols into the box that describes the safety concern or caution. (You can only do this if this PPT is saved to your computer.) Need help? Go here: http://chemistry.about.com/od/healthsafety/ig/Laboratory-Safety-Signs/ Safety Symbols Drag & Drop Review THERMAL SAFETY This symbol appears as a reminded to use caution when handling hot objects. BIOLOGICAL HAZARD This symbol appears when there is danger involving bacteria, fungi, or protists. SHARP OBJECT SAFETY This symbol appears when a danger of cuts or punctures caused by the use of sharp objects exists. ANIMAL SAFETY This symbol appears whenever live animals are studied and the safety of the animals and the student must be ensured. DISPOSAL ALERT This symbol appears when care must be taken to dispose of materials property. OPEN FLAME ALERT This symbol appears when use of an open flame could cause a fire or an explosion. CLOTHING PROTECTION SAFETY This symbol appears when substances used could stain or burn clothing. RADIOACTIVE SAFETY This symbol appears when radioactive materials are used. FUME SAFETY This symbol appears when chemicals or chemical reactions could cause dangerous fumes. ELECTRICAL SAFETY This symbol appears when care should be taken when using electrical equipment. FIRE SAFETY This symbol appears when care should be taken around open flames. EXPLOSION SAFETY This symbol appears when the misuse of chemicals could cause an explosion. CHEMICAL SAFETY This symbol appears when chemicals used can cause burns or are poisonous if absorbed through the skin. EYE SAFETY This symbol appears when a danger to the eyes exists. Safety goggles should be worn when this symbol appears. POISON SAFETY This symbol appears when poisonous substances are used.
