About the team...  For the past 14 years Dr. Arvid Osterberg has directed an interdisciplinary team of ISU graduate students who have extensively researched accessibility issues.  The team conducted detailed reviews of government documents and other sources including research studies and accessibility standards and guidelines.

About the publication...  Access for Everyone was first published in 2002  This revised and expanded edition includes:  references to the latest ADAAG (made available to the public in 2004)  new and improved illustrations  many additional recommendations based on universal design principles  A new referencing system will:  help the reader sort out the complex standards and  understand what has been added and  understand what has been modified in the latest ADAAG requirements

Access for Everyone provides:  recommendations in straightforward language  clear directives  realistic illustrations  recommendations based on universal design principles

Access for Everyone will help you:  understand the needs of all people, including the needs of people with disabilities  identify features of buildings and sites that need to be analyzed for accessibility  understand the basic requirements of ADAAG  decide what actions need to be taken to ensure accessibility  make both new and existing buildings and sites accessible to all people

Access for Everyone has three main uses: 1.To review building and site plans 2.As a field guide for on-site inspections 3.As a reference resource or classroom textbook

Access for Everyone is divided into five sections:  Accessible Routes & Spaces  Alarms, Safety Areas, & Signs  Restrooms & Bathrooms  Equipment, Tables, & Seating  Specific Use Areas

Each Section in Access for Everyone is divided into chapters For example…. 1. Accessible Routes & Spaces contains: RRReach Ranges PAParking CRCurb Ramps RTRoutes & Spaces RPRamps

Using Access for Everyone as a notation system… Each chapter that includes accessibility requirements is identified with a two letter designation (e.g. DR for Doors)

Using Access for Everyone as a notation system… K1 identifies the requirements to “Provide space for a front approach that is...”

Using Access for Everyone as a notation system… a. Identifies the additional requirement that the space be “48in. (1220mm) minimum perpendicular to the doorway...”

Using Access for Everyone as a notation system… For example: You could note DR-K1-a next to a pocket door on a plan where you need to make sure that 48 inches (1220 mm) of space is provided for a front approach to that door. You can also list notations this way on a note pad or enter them into a spreadsheet on a laptop computer for easy reference later.
