Business 86, Medical Terminology Function The nervous system is one of the most complicated systems of the body. Along with the endocrine system, it controls man bodily activities. The nervous system senses changes in both the internal and external environments, interprets these changes, and then coordinates appropriate responses that are designed to maintain homeostasis.

Business 86, Medical Terminology Diseases and Conditions of the Nervous System MM eningitis - inflammation of the meninges EE ncephalopathy - disease of the brain MM igraine headache -The most common type of vascular headache MM acrocephaly - large head MM icrocephaly - small head HH ydrocephalus - An abnormal increase in the amount of cerebrospinal fluid within the cranial cavity

Business 86, Medical Terminology EE ncephalitis - inflammation of the brain CC oncussion - injury to the brain caused by a blow; usually resulting in loss of consciousness HH ematoma - blood tumor; a large collection of blood in the tissues that is palpable AA mnesia - loss of memory

AA phasia - without speech DD ysphasia - difficulty speaking CC VA - cerebral vascular accident (stroke) MM ultiple Sclerosis -A chronic degenerative disease of the central nervous system in which gradual destruction of myelin occurs NN europathy - nerve disease

NN euralgia - nerve pain NN euritis - inflammation of a nerve SS ciatica - inflammation of the sciatica nerve CC erebral Palsy - A disability disorder resulting from damage to the brain before or during birth EE pilepsy - A disorder of the brain that results in recurrent, unprovoked seizures  P arkinson’s disease - a group of conditions called motor system disorders. It affects various parts of the body, causing stiffness in the muscles, slowness, difficulty when starting movements and tremor

Business 86, Medical Terminology  Hallucination - A sensory experience in which a person can see, hear, smell, taste, or feel something that isn’t there  Lethargy - tired  Syncope - fainting  Coma - Deep unconsciousness  Narcolepsy - A sleep disorder marked by sudden, uncontrollable urges to sleep  Anxiety - A feeling of apprehension, often characterized by feelings of stress.  Delirium - craze: state of violent mental agitation; a usually brief state of excitement and mental confusion often accompanied by hallucinations
