Hey Kids! My name is Miss Virginia. And I’m here to tell you about the Space Race. Now don’t you worry, I’ll be here along the way helping you understand what’s going on. And I’m Tad! I’m so excited for my first adventure through space! Are you? Do you have your spacesuit? Good! Then lets go!!

This is the beginning of the space race. Sputnik was the name of the satellite that the Soviet Union sent into space. Oh, I know something about Sputnik! It made one revolution every 90 minutes !

Sputnik 2 took a dog named Laika into space, but they didn’t figure out how to get her down. What about the united states? What were they doing to try and get into space?

That is a very good question Tad. But first let’s make sure every one else understands. The Space Race was called that because it was a race between the Soviets and the Americans to get to the moon first. I want America to win!

This satellite was the first American Satellite to orbit the Earth. Go America!

President Dwight Eisenhower signed the papers that created NASA. Do you know what NASA stands for? I do! It Stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

This Soviet satellite was the first man- made object to reach the moon Doesn’t it look like a barbeque that someone flipped upside down?

The newspapers ended up making fun of the Astronauts because a chimpanzee could do their job. I know him! His name is Ham.

When NASA was called about the Soviets sending a real person into space, all they could say was, “We’re all asleep down here..” In school we learned that the Soviets didn’t have Astronauts they have cosmonauts !

But the American’s got back at the Soviets and sent Alan Shepard into space. This is when they started using the phrase “A-OK!”

This probe orbited the moon and played the song Internationale for a political meeting in the soviet union That one looks like a robot. (robot voice) I am a robot, BLEEP BLOOP!

In the end the country who put man on the moon was America! Wait so who won?

Well now, wasn’t that a fun trip? We learned so much. And Tad, you helped us learn a lot too. My favorite part was when the Astronauts landed on the moon because they look just like me. My favorite part was America winning!
