Vampire Squid Moon Jelly Angler Fish Frilled Shark Six-Gill Shark Concepts on Deep Sea Life How they Impact them How they Impact us Conclusion

Vampire Squid is a squid that is 12 inches that has eight tentacles which are webbed. It lives 2000 to 3000 feet below the surface. The scientific name for it is Vanpyruteuthis infernalis. Did you know that the Vampire Squid can move if its diet creates enough diarrhea to shoot out their anal cavities to move them forward?

Moon Jelly is a part of the jellyfish family. It can be from cm long when fully grown. The Moon Jelly has many names such as Saucer Jelly, Common Jelly, and Moon Jellyfish. The scientific name for this ocean creature is Aurelia aurita. Carl Linnaeus found the Moon Jelly in 1758.

Angler Fish are about 2 feet long. It has an antenna that acts as a lure. The male and female are very different, when a male and female are very different it is called sexual dimorphrism. There are more than 200 species of the Angler Fish. The closest Angler Fish to the surface is one mile down. Samuel Garman is the first person to find this kind of fish and that was in 1899.

Frilled Shark is 1 of 2 extant sharks in the shark family. The Frilled Shark is 2m long. It catches prey by bending its body and jolting forward like a snake. It swallows its prey whole. It has been around for 80 million years. Some people call it the living fossil.

Six-Gill Shark is 16 feet long. It is one of the most commonly studied sharks. Many of its relatives are now extinct. Did you know that it is a hexanchidae shark? (Hexanchidae sharks have an additional pair of gill slits). Its scientific name is Hexanchus griseus. Another name for it is a Cow Fish.

The Deep Sea is a part of the sea that is the lowest layer of the sea; which is at least 1800 meters or more. In the Deep Sea is is pitch black, nothing can be seen, it is as if you were blind. It is freezing cold down there, the normal temperature is near freezing. The pressure down there is hundreds of bars. (Bars is how you calculate pressure). There is very minimal oxygen. It is scarce to see food, the only way Deep Sea Creatures eat is from food floating down. Sea creatures that live in the Deep Sea live hundreds to thousands of meters below the surface.

72% of the Earth is water so they are taking up a lot of space and a lot of land that we cannot find out about. Deep ocean life interferes with us mining down there.

Pollution is a big factor because more than sea creatures die a year from pollution and deep ocean life die from that Oil spills is another large issue – if oil gets into their water then more die from that fish from pollution.

Conclusion I learned a lot about deep ocean life. I didn’t know that these creatures are so scary looking. They are so interesting! !!!GO DEEP SEA CREATURES!!!
