PIP- BOOSTER RF Tuner and Cavity Refurbishment 3/7/12 M. Slabaugh

Refurbishment One cycle of cavity and tuner refurbishment nearly complete October March 2012 Included: Transport to MI-60 (1-2 days) Setup and testing in MI-60 cave (2-3 months) Disassemble (1-2 days) Cavity vacuum leak repair (1 week) Tuner prep (2 spare, one good) (3 weeks) Reassemble with new cooling lines (1 week) Testing and trouble shooting (1-2 months) Estimated return-to-duty week of March 19??

Refurbishment- Challenges Safe handling- tuners weigh ~ 625lbs. Cone cooling and repair Fit-up and tolerances to cavity Training/manpower

Refurbishment Handling Have fixtures being made in the machine shop FESS formalizing requirements for beam hoist in the room Developing procedures and checklists

Refurbishment Cone Single largest challenge to tuner mechanical refurbishment- needed for additional cooling To refurbish a cone: Strip  Burn  Grit blast  Braze  Clean/grind  Tape  Spray  Epoxy/assembly  Clean  test  tin plate

Refurbishment Cone Developing process to refurbish the cones without stripping Remove old tube  epoxy new tube  test  tin plate Have shown it is theoretically possible to repair damaged fingers If we can make this work, will simply repair cones already in the tuners

Refurbishment Training and manpower Adequate effort at present, beneficial for another technician in near term TD is willing to provide effort Two contract technicians Great work ethic, eager to learn Quickly developing needed skills Could lose them anytime
