Resourcing Urban Discipleship by: - Unlocking real life stories of urban people Revealing Good News of the down-to-earth Christ Releasing life changing skills and confidence

Unlock is an ecumenical Christian organisation that has been working for about 30 years to help urban churches of any denomination to respond to the challenges in their areas. We are especially concerned with helping people in ‘text-shy’ or ‘non-book’ cultures to explore their faith.

We don’t have a one size fits all approach, or tell you what’s best for your own situation. We respond to the local context. What we don’t do?

 We train workers and place them in cities to help churches find appropriate ways of working within their own local culture.  We also offer training and resources to other agencies placing workers in urban contexts. What do we do?

The essence of Unlock’s approach to: - Unlocking real life stories of urban people Revealing Good News of the down-to-earth Christ Releasing life changing skills and confidence is illustrated by the next slide..... Unlock essentials

 Over many years we have developed expertise and an understanding of ways of working.  We also have resources you can use such as..... What else has Unlock done?

Unlock was founded in the early 1970s by a group of Christian leaders & ministers who shared a concern for Britain’s inner cities. One source of inspiration was the work David Sheppard was doing in Newham How did Unlock Start?

 The National office is located in Sheffield.  Unlock is run by three part time administrative and management staff.  4 Unlock Field Workers are currently employed part time in local projects in Glasgow and Hull.  Unlock work is currently being developed in other urban locations. How does Unlock operate now?

Unlock works in partnership with ‘local support groups’ to employ Unlock Field workers, part time, in UK Cities.  Unlock is entirely funded on a voluntary basis by those who believe in our work  Our annual London walk attracts at least 700 people each April and raises about half of our annual budget through sponsorship and donations.  Other funds are provided by gifts from supporters. How is Unlock funded?

 urgently focussed on bringing God’s Good News to those who have often been ignored as unimportant, here, on our own doorsteps, in our own UK cities. Unlock’s work is about Christian Mission

Unlock’s work is about Christian Mission  Traditional urban communities are one of the few places remaining in British culture where there is still a degree of respect for the Christian Faith, but those very communities have not had opportunities to explore that faith for themselves, because traditional church style and language are predominantly middle class, and inappropriate for their culture, and just put people off.

 Unlock works to plug this gap, by providing urban communities with ways of exploring faith that are designed specifically for them, and meet their particular needs. Unlock’s work is about Christian Mission

 With 30 years of experience and expertise, we -  train, pay, and resource workers in city locations,  offer our insights and experience to others working in urban mission,  make our resources available, free of charge, to anyone who wants to use them in their work of developing urban discipleship. Unlock’s work is about Christian Mission
