The Circulatory System Blood brings OXYGEN and NUTRIENTS to organs and muscles. Blood removes waste from organs and muscles. Waste is delivered to the kidneys, liver, and lungs.

Heart Facts If your circulatory system were laid out from end to end it could go around the world twice! The heart pumps as much as 2,000 gallons of blood a day. Your heart beats around 100,000 times a day, 36500000 times a year and over a billion times if you live beyond 30. A kitchen faucet would need to be turned on all the way for at least 45 years to equal the amount of blood pumped by the heart in an average lifetime. Early Egyptians believed that the heart and other major organs had wills of their own and would move around inside the body.

Circulatory System Write these facts in your notebook The main organ of the circulatory system is the heart. The fluid that flows through the circulatory system is called blood. Veins carry blood to the heart. (goes in) Arteries carry blood away from the heart. Capillaries are tiny blood vessels. Animation of beating heart: Another animation

Brainpop: Blood Blood Pressure Blood Blood is always red. In veins, blood looks blue because it is loaded with carbon dioxide wastes. Red blood cells carry & exchange oxygen. White blood cells fight infection. Platelets aid in clotting blood. Plasma is the liquid portion of the blood. Everybody’s blood falls into one of four groups: A, B, AB, or O. O can receive or donate to all four types.
