Presentation transcript:

We use reported speech to tell someone what another person said. "I work in the garden." Sam said she worked in the garden.

In reported speech, we usually report what was said at a different time, and so we change the tense to reflect the time which we are reporting: "I work in the garden." Present Past She said: Shework ed in the garden

"I am playing basketball" He said (that) he was playing basketball "I have fed the duck" He said (that) he had fed the duck

"I ran 2Km in the park" He said (that) he had run 2Km in the park Present PastPast Perfect

"I was cooking pizzas for 2 days" He said (that) he had been cooking pizzas for 2 days.

" We had finished the house project when the clients arrived. " Present PastPast Perfect She said (that) They had finished the house project when the clients arrived.

Peter: "I will give him a present." Peter said he would give him a present." Peter: "I can play the guitar." Peter said he could play the guitar." Peter: "I may go to the party." Peter said he might go to the party." Peter: "I could lend you my book." Peter said he could lend me his book."

If the sentence contains an expression of time or place, you must change it as well. Peter: "I worked in the garden yesterday." Peter said that he had worked in the garden the day before. this (evening)that (evening) today/this daythat day last weekendthe weekend before / the previous weekend next (week)the following (week) tomorrowthe next/following day yesterdaythe day before herethere

If we report something which is still true, it is not necessary to change the verb. "My car is bigger than yours." He said his car is bigger than mine.

Affirmative commands Father: "Do your homework." My father told me to do my homework. Negative commands Teacher. "Don't talk to your neighbour." The teacher told me not to talk to my neighbour.

In Reported speech there is no question anymore, the sentence becomes a statement. friendsAre ? you He asked me if we were friends The word order is: subject - verb you play football"Do ?" He asked me if I played football.

When we report questions with who, what… is"Who the champion?" She asked me who the champion was
