#5 Divide after – not before – a single letter syllable within the root of a word. If there are two single-vowel syllables together that are sounded separately, the words should be divided between these two syllables. #12 THROUGH #15 Leave at least two letters on the line with the hyphen, and carry over at least three letters (or two letters plus a punctuation mark.) Ending two consecutive lines in hyphens is acceptable. Ending three or more consecutive lines in hyphens is NOT acceptable. Avoid dividing the first line and the last full line of a paragraph. Do not divide the last word on a page.
