-ed and –ing are called suffixes. A suffix is letters added to the end of a word. A suffix changes the word. Cat  cats Play  played Jump  jumping

Some verbs and suffixes are easy. Play  playing  played Jump  jumping  jumped Walk  walking  walked Just add ed or ing!

Other verbs are tricksters! Hop  hopping  hopped What happened here? Pat  patting  patted What happened here?

When the verb has one syllable and ends with a short vowel and one consonant, you need to double the consonant. Hop  hopping pat  patted Dig  digging clap  clapped
