Semenzoo Italy Holstein 2008

HOLSTEIN BREED IN ITALY ( The past ) First holstein cattle has been imported from North America on 1930 Since 1930 to holsteins have been arrived from USA ( both registered and grade ) and Canada ( registered only) First cattle were bulls and heifers from Carnation farm On early 1970 A.I. became massive and most of the semen was imported. First A.I. italians bulls were imported too.

HOLSTEIN BREED IN ITALY - Total holstein cows: Registered holstein cows : Average herd size : 80 cows - First calf type classification: Average production: Milk Fat 3,68% Protein 3,34 %

HOLSTEIN BREED IN ITALY 2008 % registered / Total Dairy Cows % registered / Recorded Italian Dairy Cow Population

SELECTION OBJECTIVES Identification of traits for improvement - Improve milk quality: protein and fat content appropriate for fresh consumption and for cheese transformation; - Improve milk quantity, i.e. protein kg; - Improve functional longevity, i.e. ability of a healthy animal to remain longer on the farm, taking into account genetic ability for milk production. DATA COLLECTION - Performance data (production, conformation, somatic cells, calving ease and milkability) Production control each month, by an APA operator; - Animal identification including its parents.

SELECTION PROGRAM

HOLSTEIN BREED IN ITALY 2007 GENETIC EVALUATION Accurate separation of environmental contribution from genetic in a given performance - Test Day Animal Model for production trait and somatic cell score; - Animal model for conformation and milkability; - Sire model for calving ease; - Three annual releases of production, conformation, longevity, somatic cells and fertility indexes: January, April, August.
