ePSIplus Information Management Standards and Data Quality Thematic Meeting, Madrid, PSI Navigator Metadata experiences, future requirements

ePSIplus Information Management Standards and Data Quality Thematic Meeting, Madrid, Overview PSI Navigator – a quick overview Data gathering experiences Data classification – Standards & nomenclatures selected Future requirements – Commercialisation issues – What needs to happen Asset registers and metadata Web 2.0 possibilities

ePSIplus Information Management Standards and Data Quality Thematic Meeting, Madrid, A quick overview Model for a pan-European directory of PSI information – Actually incorporated search engine technology – Three sectors covered out of 21 identified Geographical data (incl. maps) Environmental data Business information – Presented as structured categories and/or use of indexing to locate content with a multiple language interface

ePSIplus Information Management Standards and Data Quality Thematic Meeting, Madrid, Data classification Reuse existing classification schemes – No point in reinventing the wheel and wasting resources – EUROVOC available in main EU languages – the IPTC thesaurus – NACE – the EU nomenclature of products (HS 2002) Used 3 levels Use Dublin Core for recording metadata

ePSIplus Information Management Standards and Data Quality Thematic Meeting, Madrid, Metadata structure The optional fields CONTRIBUTORS, SOURCE, RELATION are not included as these are not particularly applicable to PSI.

ePSIplus Information Management Standards and Data Quality Thematic Meeting, Madrid, Data gathering experiences Request for data (spreadsheets) – total failure Plan B – trawl the Internet – Far more successful! But … Very time consuming No ‘copyright’ or ‘usage’ data available Language issues … Use students

ePSIplus Information Management Standards and Data Quality Thematic Meeting, Madrid, Commercialisation Issues Some difficulties we faced – Maintaining the data manual collection & indexing publisher agreements – Creating an income France NBPA UK - most PSI free – Covering the PSI Universe

ePSIplus Information Management Standards and Data Quality Thematic Meeting, Madrid, What Needs to Happen Common classification schema(s) – Dublin core – Subject classification Asset Lists – Interoperability Technologies for auto-classification – Web 2.0

ePSIplus Information Management Standards and Data Quality Thematic Meeting, Madrid, Future Solutions Europe-wide initiative – May start as national initiatives which can be linked together – Or the European Commission could do it - carrot & stick Commercial – Only feasible once metadata exists for the data and technology developed to exploit this The Ideal - The National Technical Information Service (NTIS), USA – scientific, technical, engineering, and business related information – $5 minimum mailing fee –

ePSIplus Information Management Standards and Data Quality Thematic Meeting, Madrid, Gazing into My Crystal Ball … Web 2.0 offers hope for the future – If metadata exists for data resources then … Web services can be used to search out known sources Different classification schemes can be used and cross- referenced (in different languages) Virtual asset lists can be compiled from the data for each PSI owner – no need to maintain separate physical lists Data can be combined to create 3D+ new services!
