Chapter 1: Driving the Road

 Measure reaction time using one of two different methods  Compare the different methods of measuring reaction time  Compare the reaction times of your classmates  Investigate how distractions affect reaction time

Find your correct seat, read agenda, pull out supplies In your lab notebook, skip the first few pages and then start numbering each one after that starting with 1. Page 1 skip 3 lines then answer the question: You see three birds outside flying around and chasing each other. They fly towards the building about the hit the glass: the first one hits it without seeing it; the second tries to doge it, but still hits it; the third manages to avoid it. Why might this have happen? (2-3 sentences)

Find your correct seat, read agenda, pull out supplies, grab a book In your lab notebook, turn to page 2 (where your investigation starts) and make your estimates described on page 9. Then answer the questions below with the title DO NOW: 1. Your partner drops the ruler to test your reaction time, you get a length of 12cm, what was your reaction time? 2. On the second try, you get a length of 15cm, and on the third you get 30cm (oops!), what was your average reaction time?

Find your correct seat, read agenda, pull out supplies, grab a book Describe Method A and Method B in 3 steps or less. What 3 things will be tested in the Distractions section of the Investigation? If my reaction time is being tested and my partner gets the time on the stop watch and I get the time 25.07, what was my reaction time? Which method is this? If my partner drops the yard stick and I get 4o centimeters as my length, what is my reaction time? Which method is this? How do I find the average of my 3 trials?

Find your correct seat, read agenda, pull out supplies, grab a book In your lab notebook, turn to your investigation and complete the “Comparing Methods of Measuring Reaction Time” in your notebook (1-2 sentences each), this can be found on page 11 in the book. Solve for your averages on all three methods if you haven’t yet, we will be sharing these as a class.

Find your correct seat, read agenda, pull out supplies Take 5 minutes and study for the lab safety test, using the safety contract  Decide which option you will be choosing to take your test  Timed with contract  Untimed without contract Decide what you will be working on for our work day today

Find your correct seat, read agenda, pull out supplies Take 5 minutes and study for the test over section 1, consider the following:  All the Do Now and “Physics to Go” questions completed in class  The investigation and how we found each reaction time

Look at the picture on page 8 Discuss with your group what you notice in the picture and consider the questions below, then list a few of the things discussed in your notebook  What happened? What factors could have caused this to happen?  What might we be learning about? Every person in the group should be ready to share out the thoughts of the grou p

What factors affect the time you need to react to an emergency situation while driving? In your lab notebook take 3 minutes to individually write down 2-3 sentences about what you think in response to the given question.  Consider your claim, evidences, and reasoning for what you hypothesize Everyone should be ready to share their ideas Everyone else should be listening/comparing

Turn to page 9 in the book and read the investigation - take 8 minutes While your read, write in your your lab notebook what materials you will be using, and a few words for each step of the procedure. When you’re done, consider what your tables for today’s activity will look like and how you will calculate reaction time for each method

Pairs need:  2 stop watches Tables needed:  Method A:  Trials (3)  Time 1  Time 2  Reaction Time  1 calculator  Method B:  Trials (3)  Length  Reaction Time  1 yard stick  Distractions:  Trials (5)  Red/Green  CD change  Phone Call

Turn to page 12 in the book and complete the reading “Physics Talk” using your new knowledge of Cornell notes When you are done answer the Checking Up questions found on page 13. If you finish early (or for homework) complete the Active Physics Plus on page 15 for advanced proficiency of section 1. * Remember I expect everyone to try to get advance on every section of the book.

Turn to page 17 in the book and complete the “Essential Questions” section with your group/pair Be ready to explain your answers in front of the class.

Write down 3 times that reaction time has affected you in the last 24 hours.

Write your answer in your lab notebook about what you think now (2-3 sentences) What factors affect the time you need to react to an emergency situation while driving?  Consider your claim, evidences, and reasoning for what you hypothesize  Was your hypothesis right or wrong and why?  Include aspects of what we learned in this section

1. Check out your ebook online   Username: scsmithVP  Password: physics 2. Read the “Your Challenge” on page 3. Answer “Physics to Go” questions 1-8 on pg Answer “Inquiring Further” questions on pg Read “Reflecting on the section and the challenge” page Get the Syllabus and Safety contract signed 7. Bring in your supplies if you haven’t already 8. Read the Safety contract and be ready for a test on it on Wednesday or Thursday
