Class: Crustacea Subclass: Copepoda Order: Eucopepoda Suborder:Cyclopoida Microcyclops varicans (Sars) Description: The caudal rami has inner marginal hairs and is twice as long as wide. The lateral spine on the caudal rami is place approximately midway (50%) the distance from the last abdominal segment and tip of rami. Number of segments in the 1st antennae is 9, sometimes 10, 11 or 12. The 5th leg of male is one segmented with one long spine. The small cyclopoid is often misidentified and confused with Ectocyclops phaleratus, Microcyclops bicolor and other small species.

Plate 023a. The 1st antennae (left) and caudal rami (right) of Microcyclops varicans. The 1st antennae has 9 segments. Two setae on caudal rami appear to be superior in size than others, with faint inter-most setae slightly shorter than outer most setae.

Plate 023b. Caudal rami of Microcyclops varicans. Lateral spine at 50%. Hairs on margin Plate 023b. Caudal rami of Microcyclops varicans.

Plate 023c. Fifth leg of Microcyclops varicans. Spine on 5th leg segment 1st segment of 5th leg Plate 023c. Fifth leg of Microcyclops varicans.
