Definition of Allusion 1. A poetic device 2. An allusion is a reference, within a literary work, to another work of fiction, a film, a piece of art, or even a real event They are used to link concepts that the reader already has knowledge of with concepts of discussed in the story.

Examples Describing someone as a "Romeo" makes an allusion to the famous young lover in Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Darla didn’t like to spend money. She was no Scrooge, but she was thrifty.

to meet one’s Waterloo (allusion on Napoleons defeat in the Battle of Waterloo) to wash one’s hands of it. (allusion on Pontius Pilatus, who sentenced Jesus to death, but washed his hands afterwards to demonstrate that he was not to blame for it.) to be as old as Methuselah (allusion on Joseph’s grandfather, who was 969 years old according to the Old Testament)
