Media- Channel 4 Kieran smith

Channel 4 is a British public-service television broadcaster which began transmission on 2 November 1982 they are commercial based and that is how they get there money, even though they are a big independant company. The channel was established to provide a fourth television service to the United Kingdom in addition to the television licence-funded BBC's two services and the single commercial broadcasting network, ITV. The company is owned by Channel Four Television Corporation which are the main institution, otherwise is a group of people in the company However the Chairman is Lord Burns and the CEO is David Abraham The company has over 1000 eplayees through out the company, suplied with many important jobs. Channel 4, in common with the other main British stations which were broadcast on analogue, airs a range of programming. It was established in 1982 with a specific intention of providing programming to groups of minority interests, not catered for by its competitors, which at the time were only the BBC and ITV. Channel 4 was one of the first "publisher-broadcaster" stations in the world. All of its programming is produced by other companies; it exists only to fund, broadcast and distribute its programmes – a stipulation which is included in its licence to broadcast. It was also one of the first broadcasters to put its name on the introduction or end credits of programmes that it did not produce, a practice that is now widespread. Overall channel 4 provides us with a wide variety of television programes and i couldnt find any issues through out channel 4 and being a self funded company they provide the UK with great quality of different genres of programmes

New programmes have dominated Channel 4's list of most watched shows in 2012, with new commissions accounting for 74% (37) of the top 50 programmes broadcast on the main channel in and 77% (22) of the top 30. Amongst them are a range of successful new titles launched in 2012 that have already been commissioned to return in 2013 including The Undateables, Derek, Stephen Fry: Gadget Man, George Clarke's Amazing Spaces, 999: What's Your Emergency, The Hoarder Next Door and 16 Kids and Counting - as well as the return of hit US drama, Homeland. It has been a successful year for Channel 4's digital channels, with the group up +1% across 2012 and 2013 so far. E4, which recorded its best month ever for its share of its target audience in September, increased its share across that demographic by +3% in More4 also celebrated its best month for individuals in September. Channel 4 has won a host of awards in 2012 and 2013 including three Broadcast Awards, 10 RTS Programme Awards, three RTS Journalism Awards, five Bafta Television Awards, five Broadcast Digital Awards; as well as Emmys won for Homeland, and an International Emmy for Black Mirror.

Channel 4 future. Channel 4 has raised concerns over how it might finance its public service obligations after digital switch-over. However, some certainty lies in the announcement in April 2006 that Channel 4's digital switch-over costs would be paid for by licence fee revenues. On 28 March 2007, Channel 4 announced plans to launch a music channel "4Music" as a joint venture with British media company EMAP which would include carriage on the Freeview platform. On 15 August 2008, 4Music was launched across the UK. Recently, Channel 4 have announced interest in launching a high-definition version of Film4 on Freeview, to coincide with the launch of Channel 4 HD, however the fourth HD slot was given to Channel 5 instead. Channel 4 has since acquired a 50% stake in EMAP's TV business for a reported £28 million.
