33 What I planned to accomplish Create a local format registry ; reliable identify files uploaded to the NEES data repository and start working on developing preservation planning policies. How I saw myself carrying out your plan The goal of this project is not establishing a full-scale file format registry, but rather establishing the sound fundamentals for its further growth What resources I neededSoftware developer, FITS tool, access to PRONOM and other resources related to file format identification. My expected challengesCollecting preservation metadata from more than 1 M files put stress on existing infrastructure. Time; competing priorities; integration into current architecture and workflows. My six-month plan DigCCurr Professional Institute

44 How I carried out the plan (or components of the plan) I have created a table for the file formats based on the PRONOM data vocabulary; We collected identification metadata for all files in the repository Started populating the file format table What changed about my plan Planned to have documented more files Still need to re-run the identification manually in order to collect more detailed information about the files... My biggest successesIdentification of all files Identification part of the pipeline Identification part of the curation workflow My biggest challengesTo keep the software developer interested Make it a priority for the NEES IT development What I accomplished DigCCurr Professional Institute

55 What I will accomplish by next January customized API that will allow ad hoc identification At least 50 % of all formats will be identified Identification metadata will be presented to the users How I will carry this out Over the summer there is a chance that an intern can work on the identification What resources will be most helpful? CRISP PRONOM Preservation watch What I expect to be the biggest challenges To find time and prioritize Future goals DigCCurr Professional Institute

66 Areas of my plan that require collaboration creating a repository needs to be a collaborative exercise Preservation planning and identification of suitable preservation strategies Possibilities for collaborating within my institution Wider involvement of the IT support in the preservation activities Possibilities for collaborating with other Institute members - Best practices exchange - description of workflow Opportunities for collaboration DigCCurr Professional Institute
