Gross Domestic Product 9/15/15 EQ: How do American consumption patterns affect people and the planet? Warm-up: Grab a Geography Alive Textbook, read Pages 107-109 Create a symbol or illustration to represent each term Write a definition of each term in your own words Write a sentence that includes the term Geoterm and Symbol Definition Sentence Consumption Developed Country Developing Country Gross Domestic Product Per Capita

What Kind of Data does this cartogram show. How do you know What Kind of Data does this cartogram show? How do you know? Which countries have the largest populations? Which continent appears to have the most people living on it?

What does one square on this cartogram represent What does one square on this cartogram represent? What are some of the countries that consume the most food per capita? The Least? What are some factors that might account for differences in food consumption among these countries?

In your groups read Section 7.3 Answer the following questions in your notebook: How many calories per day does the average person need to live a healthy life? List three countries that consume a high number of calories per capita per day. What type of country tends to consume more calories per capita? Why do you think that is? List three countries that consume a low number of calories per capita, per day. What type of country tends to consume fewer calories per capita? Why do you think that is?

Follow these steps to discuss the question below: For each discussion your group will represent either a developed country or a developing country In your group, talk about the question from your country’s perspective Alternate the role of Presenter within your group Each Presenter will represent your group’s opinion during the discussion of one of the questions Stand up when speaking Refer to the previous speaker by saying, “(name of previous speaker), our group agrees/disagrees with you because… Support your argument with at least one piece of evidence from the reading or the cartogram Before you sit down call on the next Presenter by name Question: How does your country feel about the food consumption patterns represented on the cartogram? Why?

What does one square on this cartogram represent What does one square on this cartogram represent? What are some of the countries that consume the most oil per capita? The Least? What are some factors that might account for differences in per capita oil consumption among these countries?

In your groups read Section 7.4 Answer the following questions in your notebook: What is oil used for? Which developed countries consume the most per capita? Why do you think that is? Which developing countries consume the most per capita? Why do you think that is?

Follow these steps to discuss the question below: If your group was a developing country last time, now you will represent a developed nation. If you represented a developed nation last discussion then now your group is representing a developing nation. In your group, talk about the question from your country’s perspective Alternate the role of Presenter within your group Each Presenter will represent your group’s opinion during the discussion of one of the questions Stand up when speaking Refer to the previous speaker by saying, “(name of previous speaker), our group agrees/disagrees with you because… Support your argument with at least one piece of evidence from the reading or the cartogram Before you sit down call on the next Presenter by name Question: How does your country feel about the oil consumption patterns represented on the cartogram? Why?

What does one square on the cartogram represent What does one square on the cartogram represent? Which countries consume the most personal computers per capita? The least? What are some factors that might account for differences in per capita computer consumption among these countries?

With your Group, Read Section 7.5 Answer the following in your notebook: What are computers and the Internet used for? Which countries have the most access to technology? Why do you think that is? Which countries have the least access to technology? Why do you think that is?

Follow these steps to discuss the question below: If your group was a developing country last time, now you will represent a developed nation. If you represented a developed nation last discussion then now your group is representing a developing nation. In your group, talk about the question from your country’s perspective Alternate the role of Presenter within your group Each Presenter will represent your group’s opinion during the discussion of one of the questions Stand up when speaking Refer to the previous speaker by saying, “(name of previous speaker), our group agrees/disagrees with you because… Support your argument with at least one piece of evidence from the reading or the cartogram Before you sit down call on the next Presenter by name Question: How does your country feel about the personal computer consumption patterns represented on the cartogram? Why?

Which countries have the highest GDP per capita. The least Which countries have the highest GDP per capita? The least? Why do you think GDP is an important indicator of consumption? What comparisons can you make between this cartogram of GDP and the other consumption cartograms you saw?

With your Group, read Section 7.6 Answer the following in your notebook: What three important factors contribute to the United State’s high GDP? How does education affect GDP in the United States? How does the American work ethic affect GDP? How do you think a country’s GDP affects its citizen’s ability to consume?

Follow these steps to discuss the question below: If your group was a developing country last time, now you will represent a developed nation. If you represented a developed nation last discussion then now your group is representing a developing nation. In your group, talk about the question from your country’s perspective Alternate the role of Presenter within your group Each Presenter will represent your group’s opinion during the discussion of one of the questions Stand up when speaking Refer to the previous speaker by saying, “(name of previous speaker), our group agrees/disagrees with you because… Support your argument with at least one piece of evidence from the reading or the cartogram Before you sit down call on the next Presenter by name Question: How does your country feel about the GDP patterns represented on the cartogram? Why? How does this cartogram and the reading help explain the consumption patterns seen on the first three cartograms?

Class Discussion! Why do developed countries consume relatively more goods and services? Why do developing countries generally consume relatively fewer goods and services? What might happen if developing countries followed the same consumption patterns as developed countries? What might be some of the costs—financial, ecological, psychological- of such high levels of consumption?

9/16/15 EQ: What is the impact of the Human Environment Interaction in North America?

Pollution in Canada & America North America is rich in natural resources, but the growth of industry has seriously damaged parts of the environment. Efforts are being made to repair the damage What can ordinary people do to help the environment?

Pollution in Canada & America Acid rain is a mixture of chemicals and rain. Damaging to buildings, crops, animals, pretty much everything The Great Lakes are seriously affected by acid rain. US and Canada are working together to improve air quality and prevent acid rain

Pollution in Canada & America Smog is a mixture of smoke and fog. Dangerous to breathe for all life Caused primarily by car exhaust States require emissions tests Engineers research alternatives Industrial waste often drains into water supplies and sources. This pollutes water, kills animals, and makes people sick. Fertilizers and pesticide runoff can pollute water too

Pollution Back from the Brink: Water in the Great Lakes region became so polluted that the Cuyahoga River in Ohio actually caught fire several times in the 1970s. Clean up efforts are returning the lakes and rivers to their natural state Automobiles are a major source of pollution, yet most people in this region continue to prefer automobile transportation over mass transit. Why might they do so, and how would you meet this challenge?

Pollution in Canada & America Damage to the environment can and will have long-last consequences. Temperatures will rise. Ice at the polar caps will rise. Water levels will rise=Flooding Permafrost and Tundra are thawing How does global warming affect the area where you live?

Define the following terms: Use Chapter 7, Section 2 of the World Geography textbook to answer the following questions. Define the following terms: Clear-cutting Acid rain Smog Groundwater Global warming permafrost How are the US and Canada trying to manage their natural resources more responsibly? What are the causes and effects of pollution in these countries? Answer Geography skills for life Page 166, and 167 Answer 3-7 on page 169

Today I learned… When I call on you tell me one thing that you learned today about Human Environmental Interaction and North America
