Types of Millwork Millwork can be designed for appearance and/or for function –Designed for appearance Ornate and decorative millwork can be placed together to capture a style –Functional millwork Can be very plain Less expensive
Types of Millwork (cont’d.) Baseboards –Placed at intersection of walls and floors –Generally used for appearance and protection Wainscot –Bottom wall material is different from upper Chair rail –Traditionally placed horizontally on wall where chair backs would damage it
Types of Millwork (cont’d.) Cornices –Decorative trim placed in the corner where wall meets ceiling Casings –Used to trim around windows and doors Mantel –Ornamental shelf or structure built above a fireplace opening

Cabinets designed for universal use –Access can be improved for people with disabilities by applying a few design considerations Kitchen counter and cabinet height, wheelchair access, shape, eating area, storage, and appliances Bathroom vanity wheel chairs access, cabinet height, grab bars, and benches Laundry room cabinet height and recessing
Cabinet Elevations and Layout Developed from floor plan drawings –Show cabinet exteriors when completed –Gives general dimensions, notes, and specifications Keying cabinet elevations to floor plans –Several methods can be used

Kitchen cabinet layout –Elevations are drawn as though you are in the room looking at the cabinets –Elevations are two-dimensional Height and length are shown in an external view Depth is shown where cabinets are cut with a cutting plane establishing the line of sight –Refer to the text for steps on drawing elevations
