State Universities Florida offers you 11 public universities many with branch campuses and centers throughout the state. State University System Admission Requirements To qualify to enter one of Florida’s public universities, a student must meet the following minimum requirements: Earn a high school standard diploma Have a 2.5 GPA in high school academic core courses Receive minimum admission test scores (SAT: Reading 460 / Math 460 / Writing 440 or ACT: Reading 19 / Math 19 / English with Writing 18) OR Qualify for the Talented 20 program (be in top 20% of class) OR Be selected through a “student profile assessment” that considers other special factors (e.g., special talents, accomplishments, etc.)

ACT vs. SAT SAT has a stronger emphasis on vocabulary than the ACT. The ACT has a science section. ACT is more curriculum-based, SAT is based more on general reasoning and problem-solving skills SAT is a little longer. You should take them as early and as often as reasonable. You may qualify for a fee waiver.

Miami-Dade College This can be a stepping-stone to a four year college. Tuition is much less than a University. You can earn an Associate in Arts degree and then go on to finish your Bachelors at a four-year college. MDC also has an honors college for high-performing students. They will then help you to get accepted to a University to complete your degree. Bridge program (Honors College) – with UM – money for research in science at UM.
