Chapter 3.3 Nonprofit Organizations

Key terms  Nonprofit organization  Cooperative  Co-op  Credit union  Labor union  Professional association  Chamber of commerce  Better Business Bureau  Public Unity

Activity  Create a vocabulary poster.  Will define the terms  Use a picture to illustrate the definition of the words.  Will be used to study key terms for the chapter assessment test.

Community Organizations  Include: schools, churches, hospitals, welfare groups, and adoption agencies.  Legally incorporated to take advantage of unlimited life and limited liability.  Similar to profit-seeking businesses but do not issue stocks, pay dividends, or pay income taxes.  If activities/fundraisers produce revenues in excess of expenses, they will use the surplus to further their work.  Difficult to analyze economic importance.

Cooperatives/ Co-op  Non-profit organization  Voluntary association formed to carry on some kind of economic activity that will benefit it’s members.

Cooperatives   Using figure 3.7 on page 80, create an informational brochure on the three categories of cooperatives.  Define each type  Give 3-5 specific examples of each category  Use pictures to represent existing cooperatives in each category.

Labor Unions  An organization of workers formed to represent its members’ interest in various employment matters.  Collective bargaining: negotiating wages, hours, health benefits, vacations, etc.  Lobby for related laws.  Examples: American Federation of Labor- Congress of Industrial Organization & CTA.

Professional Associations  Consists of people in a specialized occupation.  Interest: improve working conditions, skills, public relations.  Examples: American Medical Association, Cattlemen & Cattlewomen, CATA, Young Cattlemen, many agriculture related associations.

Activity  Each student will research a Profession Association and create a poster to present the following information on the association.  Purpose  Membership number  Events put on held by association  Requirements for membership  Others

Business Associations  Businesses organized to collectively work together.  Chamber of commerce  Trade associations  Better Business Bureau

Government  Provided some goods and services while helping to make sure the economy runs smoothly.  Direct role: produces goods and services  Government electrical company  Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.  US postal service  State gov. – colleges, retirement plans, state police.  Local gov. – fire, police, rescue, schools,  Roads, libraries, parks.
