Uddingston Grammar

The majority of leadership activities on offer at Uddingston springs from the prefect system, which for many years has been organised round a Committee structure designed to give pupils the opportunity to get involved in Ethos, Charity, Peer Support, Enterprise activities where they organise and run a variety of events/structures within the school.

Some Examples:  Pupil Photographs. This is a task which begins with price negotiation with photographer and goes through the administration of the day where the pupils are photographed. The issue of photos, return of orders and monies and finishes with the photos being lodged on Click and Go. There are several leadership opportunities within this project  Charities. Pupils organise several large scale charity events, the first being a 6K sponsored road race for a local Hospice. This is organised by pupils. Also a climb of Ben Nevis. Throughout the year various events are held and several leadership opportunities arise. Video and photo evidence available  Exam Book sales – Past papers

 Talent show  School Dances  Senior school social events – e.g. fancy dress bowling, leavers’ ball. Photos available  Junior school Buddy system  Junior school paired reading  Young Enterprise  Subject specific mentoring system and class room support  Science society  Music Society  Sports – inter house  Debating society

Independent learning Independence Self confidence Empowerment Self management

What advice would you give to centres thinking about delivering the Award?

Be prepared for ambitions not meeting reality Provide clear assessment guidelines Prepare the course fully

From the learners….

What did you gain from the Award?

Learned that different activities or companies require certain styles of leadership in order to work well Learned that there are many different ways to lead. Finding out about my own style was interesting Different qualities needed to be a better leader

That it is not easy to lead a group of 1st years by myself! Learned a lot about myself! I can now apply for a position as a voluntary dance tutor for primary schools which might turn into long term work

That communication and a strong leader are important to the successful outcome of a task The Leadership course has shown me how to take control but in a respected way More confidence It has set me up for life!

It is an incredible way to find out about successful methods of leading others. It will benefit me throughout my life and is definitely worthwhile It is good to open up other areas for you as a young person It is a tough subject with a lot of information

You learn how to lead in different types of ways in various situations It is a great experience and fun and enjoyable working with others Learned how to lead a team effectively
