2 nd Quarter Notebook Let’s paste in our table of contents and set our notebook up before we start our lab! While you are pasting in your Table of Contents and Numbering your pages up to 50- REMEMBER ODD PAGES ON THE RIGHT, EVEN ON THE LEFT- I will be giving you credit for bringing in your notebook on time. If you do not have a notebook today you should use this time to find a safe place to keep your papers, and to WRITE DOWN A REMINDER to bring one in next class.

Explore – Lab Specimens PAGE 4 We will be exploring familiar plant organs by making predictions about their functions based on their structures. In the lab you will identify the structure that you see at the lab station and you will predict the function. ▫In some cases the structure will be identified with a dissection pin. You should be able to visit all 7 lab stations and make your predictions in 21 minutes.

Explain: Plant Structure Notes PAGE 3 Plants are made of tissues and organs, just like us! Tissues are a group of cells that have a similar structure and function. ▫Recall how plant cells are different from animal cells. Organs are a group of tissues that have similar structure and function ▫What organs do you have?

Plant Tissues Meristematic ▫Undifferentiated Cells/ Stem Cell (rapidly divide) Ground ▫Leaves, Young Roots, Stems (Inside of the plant) support for the plant Dermal/ Epidermal ▫Single layer outer covering (like the “plant’s skin”) Vascular ▫Complex hollow tubes that transport water, nutrients  Think of how blood travels through your body!

Plant Organs Roots- Support the plant and absorb, transport and store nutrients. Stems- Support plant, house vascular system and store food or water Leaves- Gather light, retain water, exchange gases Flowers- Reproductive Structure (think pollen) Fruits- Fertilized female ovary of a flower Cones- Reproductive Structure (pollen/sperm production)

Plant Structures Xylem- Vascular tissue that carries water Phleom- Vascular tissue that carries nutrients (sugar) Cambium- Vascular tissue, produces xylem and phloem cells Seed- Structure which stores and protects the plants embryo (think reproduction!)

Plant Structures con.. Stomata- Small opening located on the leaf: ▫Allows CO 2 into the plant ▫Allows oxygen out of the plant Guard cell- Controls the size of the opening of the stomata.

Plant Processes Transpiration ▫Evaporation of water through leaf stomata. ▫Major force moving water through plants.  Think about perspiration (sweat)!!!! Reproduction ▫Seeds: Egg (female) ▫Pollen: Sperm (male)  Put ‘em together and you get a baby plant!!!
