Effects of Immigration

Cities started to develop People from other countries are immigrating to the cities specially in New York and San Francisco. Specialized industries including steel (Pittsburgh), meat packing (Chicago), automobiles (Detroit), textiles (New England) Movement of Americans from rural to urban areas for job opportunities

Challenges faced by cities/immigrants Tenements – cheap room space Ghettos – grouping of same ethnicity, lacks ASSIMILATION (being like American) Political corruption (political machines) One of the most corrupt was New York City's boss Tweed. Overcrowding Nativism person who feels hatred towards immigrant Know-Nothing party did not like immigrants and spread the idea of prejudice against them

What were some efforts to solve immigration problems? Settlement Houses, such as Hull House founded by Jane Addams Chinese Exclusion Act - attempt at limiting the numbers of immigrants from China Gentlemen’s Agreement promise by Japan to limit the number of Japanese immigrants coming to America
