What is Competency There is often confusion between the terms competence and competency. In truth the two terms mean the same thing. ‘Competence (or competency) is the ability of an individual to do a job properly.’ ‘Competence is a required behaviour within a job role.’ ‘Competencies are the measurable or observable knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviours (KSABs) critical to successful job performance.’ ‘Competencies are those underlying characteristics of an employee – motive, trait, skill, aspects of one’s social image, social role or a body of knowledge, which can result in effective and/or superior performance in a job or role’.
