Tennessee SPI Objective: Identify several reasons for the importance of maintaining the earth's biodiversity. Notes Science Essential Learning Students will examine and prioritize multiple reasons for maintaining our planet's biodiversity. Essential Question What is biodiversity, and why is it important to preserve it? SPI Biodiversity

Silly Thought 10 I have a twin brother… …he's identical, but I'm not. Humor

SPI Biodiversity Biodiversity: is the amount and variety of organisms that live in a given area at a given time. Measured 3 ways (1) Species Richness- Amount of different species (2) Eveness- Balance of the species (3) Genetic diversity- How closely the species are related Watch a Holt Online Visual Concept.  Chpt 6, eActivities tab, Visual Concepts, Sect One, Biodiversity Link: Holt Online Textbook WebsiteHolt Online Textbook Website Notes Science

SPI (Biodiversity) Identify several reasons for the importance of maintaining the earth’s biodiversity. Here are 8 Reasons to Maintain Biodiversity 1) To feed the world 2) To provide more medicine 3) To maintain our economies 4) To provide life support for our biosphere 5) To avoid disrupting food webs 6) To satisfy human curiosity 7) To preserve nature's beauty 8) To respect life in all its forms Notes Science SPI Biodiversity

Science SPI Biodiversity Notes 1) To feed the world  90 percent of the world's food comes from only 20 plant species Examples: Corn, Rice, Wheat, Soybeans, etc.  If a disease or natural disaster damages or wipes out one or more of these crops, famine would result (millions could starve).  With more varieties of these types of plants, we increase our chances of avoiding and/or reducing the impact of a famine. Reasons to Maintain Biodiversity

SPI Biodiversity Science Notes 2) To provide more and better medicine  40% of medicine prescribed in the USA comes from plants, animals, or microorganisms.  With less biodiversity there is less opportunity to find new medicines Reasons to Maintain Biodiversity

SPI Biodiversity Science Notes 3) To maintain our economies  Various plants and animals are vitally important parts of our national and global economies  If some disaster were to wipe out one or more of these resources, tremendous financial hardship would result Reasons to Maintain Biodiversity

SPI Biodiversity Science Notes 4) To provide life support for our biosphere  Various plants and animals provide vital services to life on earth Example: Oysters filter water making it cleaner for other marine life Example: Forests absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen Reasons to Maintain Biodiversity

SPI Biodiversity Science Notes 5) To avoid disrupting food webs  When we over-hunt or over-harvest wild plants and wild animals and/or wipe out species due to pollution and habitat destruction, we seriously disrupt the food chains and food webs Reasons to Maintain Biodiversity

Biodiversity Poster Requirements  Due Wednesday (Oct 22 nd )  On white copy paper, draw and color a poster about preserving and conserving biodiversity.  Address one or more of the major factors that reduce global biodiversity such as… (1) Pollution, (2) Resource Depletion, (3) Habitat destruction, (4) Exotic Species, and/or (5) Overpopulation  Can include details about "Reduce-Reuse-Recycle"  Complete heading goes on the back  Helpful to use rhymes (Ex: "Give A Hoot-Don't Pollute")  Must have a BOLD message,  Must include a diagram Poster SPI Biodiversity Science
