Chapter 19 By: Nate Choby Chase Pastor Shane Livermore Steven Semekoski Nick Winter

Characters  Scout Finch- becomes more ladylike  Atticus- becoming more aloof  Jem- becoming more mature  Tom Robinson- defendant  Mayella Ewell- victim

Characters Cont.  Mr. Gilmer- prosecuting the case  Judge Taylor- oversees the case  Mr. Link Deas- interrupts the court case  Dill- Sickened by racism  Dolphus Raymond- talks to the kids after Dill gets sick

Questions O Q- Why did Tom Robinson go to the Ewell’s house in the first place? O A- He was passing by and Mayella asked him to do something for her O Q- Explain the relation of Mayella and her father? O A- She is abused mentally, physically, and verbally by her father

Questions O Q- Why did Scout call Mayella “the loneliest person in the world?” O A- Mayella has no friends and nobody in her family cares about her; Tom Robinson was the only person who ever showed her respect O Q- What is Dill’s reaction to Mr. Gilmer’s cross- examination of Tom? O A- He is sickened by it

IMPORTANT QUOTATIONS “It just makes you sick doesn’t it” – Dolphus Raymond “I just want the whole lot of you to know one thing right now. That boy’s worked for me eight years an’ I ain’t had a speck o’trouble outa him. Not a speck.”- Link Deas

Questions O Q- What does Tom say that Mr. Ewell saw through the window? O A- He saw Mayella struggling to kiss Tom O Q- What does Scout say is a sure sign of guilt? O A- He ran away from the crime scene

ANALYSIS OF CHAPTER Tom testifies in his own court case. What he says is a lot more believable than what Mayella said. In scout’s mind, Tom seems to be more of a gentleman than Atticus. He doesn’t act like the rest of the town when it comes to the Ewells. Almost all of Maycomb County treated the Ewells with great disdain. He did odd jobs for Mayella without taking any pay even though it was offered. The jury, showing how racist they were, were extremely angry that a black man felt sorry for a white woman, even though she was a Ewell. Mr. Gilmer also shows a bit of racism by continuously implying that the reason Tom ran away was because he was guilty, even though Tom stated that he would have been in more danger if he hadn’t run. After witnessing this through his own eyes, Dill loses it and needs to step outside, where Scout and Dill meet and start to talk to Dolphus Raymond.

Questions O Why does the jury act so hostile to Tom Robinson? O Because he is black. In the 1930’s most black people in the South were treated very badly, all the way up to the late 1950’s O Why does Dill get sick and must leave? O Because he gets a first and look at how racist and mean people could be to eachother.

 Tom Robinson tells his side of the story  Tom explains that he did work for Mayella for free because he feels bad for her  Jury is angered because a black man felt bad for a white women Summary
