Murder Mystery CSI ESAT High

You are a detective working for the police department. You have just been called to the scene of a murder.

David Duff was found in his home, DEAD. He was stabbed in the stomach 7 times. He was sitting on his couch. The TV was on. He had been watching a Lakers game.

You have 3 possible suspects…

Suspect 1 Lucy (David’s Wife) Earlier that day, she and David got in a heated argument. She hates how he watches TV all the time.

Suspect 2 Carlos (David’s Friend) David told Carlos that he had tickets to the Lakers game. They were supposed to go. But David lied. Carlos was angry.

Suspect 3 Michael (David’s Co-Worker) Michael is a Celtics fan. They really, really don’t like each other.

As a detective, what is the problem that you are trying to solve?

Who do you think killed David Duff? Please make a prediction.

It is time for you to collect evidence… How do you go about doing this?

The evidence you discover… 1) You interview Carlos and find out that he actually found someone else who had tickets to the Lakers game. They were at Staples Center.

2) You interview Lucy’s friend and the friend says that she wasn’t mad at David anymore about watching TV. Plus, they were at the mall all afternoon. There was no way she could have killed David during that timeframe.

3) You interview Michael. He says that he was at work at the time of the murder. You talk to his boss. Turns out…Michael left work early.

Based on the evidence you have discovered, who do you think killed David Duff? Why?

Congratulations! You have used your logic skills to solve the murder mystery! Upon further search, you find a bloody knife in the trunk of Michael’s car. The DNA matches David’s.

Detective Skills and the Scientific Method The process that you used to solve the murder mystery is very similar to the process that scientists use to discover new things.

The Scientific Method involves steps used to gather information and find answers

In science we cannot jump into conclusions! Evidence = Data!

1. Observation or Question 2. Formulate a Hypothesis 3. Experiment 4. Gather Results 5. Conclusion

Steps of the Scientific Method Observation Observation: Make observations using the five senses (see, touch, smell, taste, hear)OR Question Question: Develop a question that can be solved through experimentation. Who killed David Duff?

Do you remember the next step?

Steps of the Scientific Method 2. Formulate a Hypothesis 2. Formulate a Hypothesis: A possible explanation to the question/observa tion. If___ then___ format If I interview the three suspects, then I will find the murderer

Steps of the Scientific Method 3. Plan the Experiment: Develop and follow a procedure (gameplan). The outcome must be measurable (collect data). I will interview the suspects and determine the place they were located during the time in which the murder took place.

Steps of the Scientific Method 4.Collect and Analyze Results 4.Collect and Analyze Results: Include tables, graphs, and photographs.

Steps of the Scientific Method Conclusion Conclusion: interpret the results and do the results/data support or reject the hypothesis. Michael was most likely the killer. My hypothesis was___ and the data supports it.

7 Minutes of Terror

Variables Heat of the rover Landing Speed The air Gravity Change only one variable to see how it affects something else. Everything else keep constant.

Independent Variable is a variable that you purposefully change to see how it affects something else. Jon is going to use 10g, 15g, 20g of yeast to determine how bread forms in the oven. How to set up an experiment correctly!

Dependent Variable The dependent or responding variable is something else that changes because of the first thing you changed. In this case, it would be the amount of bread made. How to set up an experiment

Control In a scientific experiment, the control is a sample that serves as comparison. The control is a “no treatment” sample Sample with no yeast How to set up an experiment

A good scientist repeats the experiment to see if he or she achieves similar results If you average the data, then the data becomes more accurate. Present findings to the scientific community so they can reproduce (repeat) your experiment.

Gallery Critique Noise Level: Low (whisper voice) Don’t just do, understand. The peer feedback is very important. Be neat, place in envelope. If done early, do some practice problems as review. Practice using the Ipad calculator.

Common Misconceptions (Errors) ① Start with a number that is not part of a conversion factor; some starting amount ② Your conversion factor must make sense ③ When numbers are on top multiply, when on the bottom divide ④ When you have exponents use parenthesis on calculator Ex: (10 3 ) or (3 x 10 3 ) x10 y = EE

Converting using objects  5 Stations = 5 minutes to solve each one  Show your work on the bottom of Pg 8L where you wrote your reflection.
