Code.org Update Brook Osborne 9-12 Program Manager ACM Ed Council Meeting 2 November 2013

Agenda ▪Update on the 3 pillars ▪Advocate ▪Educate ▪Celebrate ▪Growth at Code.org ▪How you can help

Advocate: Making CS Count State school boards of Tennessee and Idaho changed policy to allow AP CS to satisfy existing math & science graduation requirements. 2 more states down, 35 to go. We have a strong coalition of diverse organizations to lobby in the remaining 35 states, from existing Computing in the Core efforts, to industry and educational partners like Microsoft, CSTA, NMSI, College Board, Stand.org, and many, many others.

Advocate: Making CS Count NCAA published its standard for giving CS academic credit (complete reversal of policy). Now, NCAA will give academic credit to any rigorous CS class IF the school itself counts it for math/science credit.

Advocate: CS Education Act Clarify that existing and currently funded federal programs could invest in computer science and support local and state educators who want to put computer science curriculum and teachers in schools. Both proposals would amend the definition of “core academic subjects” in the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) to add computer science and build on that proposed change to create more support for computer science education in federal education policies.

Advocate: CS Education Act The US House and Senate both introduced the CS Education Act with bipartisan support. The House unanimously approved our CS amendment to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.

Educate: k-8 ▪Created a 20-hour online course. done with significant help of engineers from Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and Twitter, plus a team of CS educators. ▪Confirmed Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, others as video lecturers, and licensed art-work from games like Plants vs Zombies (for use in the HoC tutorials and longer, 20-hour online curriculum).

Educate: 6-8 Verbal agreements with the authors of the Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards to co-author middle-school modules to teach CS integrated with middle- school math and science.

Educate: 9-12 ▪Long term: High school CS education model that includes bringing ECS and CSP into districts with long term PD supports. Includes development of a CS Principles curriculum. ▪Short term: Working to bring ECS to 100 high schools starting in AY

Educate: Ed. Advisory Group ▪Owen Astrachan, Professor of the Practice. Duke University ▪Jake Baskin, Computer Science Teacher. Celebrate: Hour of Code ▪An unparalleled list of partners to promote the Hour of Code campaign, including: ▪Over a dozen of web sites reaching over 1 billion unique users including Google/Youtube, Apple, Yahoo, Bing/MSN, Amazon/Zappos, Zulily, Zynga, Disney, Electronic Arts. ▪Education partners including CSTA, College Board, Teach For America, NSTA, NCTM, Boys & Girls Club, DonorsChoose, and many, many more.

Celebrate: Hour of Code ▪An unparalleled list of partners to promote the Hour of Code campaign, including: ▪Over $1mm in prizes from Dropbox, Skype, iTunes, and others. ▪Corporations like JPMorgan, Microsoft, and Pearson asking over 500,000 employees to evangelize Hour of Code to local schools.

Celebrate: More videos! Ashton Kutcher, Sofia Vergara, Angela Basset, Dwight Howard agreed to star in our next big video.

Code.org Team Growth This quarter our team grew from 1 to full-time, the remaining 29 are part-time, contractors, or volunteers. Why so many? We’re simultaneously bringing CS to hundreds of schools, modernizing curriculum, advocating in dozens of states, and running an unprecedented marketing campaign.

How you can help ▪Now: promote the hour of code in your area ▪Short-term: in the coming months we're going to launch petitions to get CS to count in every state in the country. Help us get those moving in your area. ▪Long-term: we’ll work to make CS count as a math or science entrance credit for university admissions. Help make this happen at your school and in your area!

Thank you
