 Tonight we will discuss how biological and environmental influences impact development in prenatal and new born children..  Some of the questions we will address include:  What interventions are recommended for helping women who engage in risky behaviors while pregnant?  What problems do pregnant women have who are from lower socioeconomic groups?  What problems are common among children whose parents are in the higher socioeconomic groups?  What problems do women who are diagnosed with mental and/or addiction disorders have related to pregnancy? Provide some interventions that can help to lessen these problems.

 Molly is a 25-year-old female that presented to the clinic seeking support after discovering that she is pregnant. Molly is currently not married and has no other children. Molly successfully completed an Associate’s degree in Business Administration from the local community college. She currently works in a grocery store as a clerk and lives alone in a one-bedroom apartment.  Molly is the second oldest of three children born to her biological parents. Her parents divorced when Molly was 12-years-old. Molly’s older brother is currently incarcerated on drug related charges and is expected to be released in the next five years. Her younger sister lives with their mother and step-father while attending the local community college. Molly’s mother is a third grade teacher and her step-father is employed as a CPA. Molly’s father is also re-married and has two young children with his wife. Her father and step- mother live in a near-by state. Molly has not seen them since her first year in college but speaks to her father by phone a few times per year.  Molly reported that she has a turbulent relationship with her boyfriend, her unborn child’s father. They have been dating on and off for approximately three years. She further reports that she smokes approximately 15 cigarettes per day and occasionally drinks alcohol to the point of intoxication. She has not disclosed her pregnancy to her family but indicates that she wants to continue the pregnancy and raise the child herself.
