UNIT 1 SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY

What to Write and What Not to Write All section titles and assignments will be written in white letters inside a black box with a white edge. Write these down to organize your notes. Do not write down any other words in white or black, even if they are on a colorful background. Write down words that are in any color other than white or black (includes red, yellow, green, orange, etc.) Example

Accidents Happen

SCIENCE SAFETY RULES Responsible conduct

Follow instructions.

Never work in a laboratory without an instructor present.

Do not touch anything until told.

Do not eat, drink, chew gum, or apply any type of make-up, lotions, etc.

Wafting = the safe way to smell a chemical is to use your hand to waft the fumes toward your nose. Do not sniff chemicals.

Never taste anything.

Never mix anything unless told to do so.

Know where safety equipment is and what to do for emergencies.

Work in a well-ventilated area when using chemicals that emit harmful vapors. Fume Hood = a vacuum to remove harmful chemical fumes/vapors.

Heating test tubes: Hold the test tube with TONGS Point the tube AWAY from people. Wear GOGGLES

Can you spot the safety concerns?

Dispose of all chemicals and waste materials as instructed by your teacher.

1.Tell the teacher. 2.The teacher will clean up the glass. DO NOT CLEAN UP BROKEN GLASS YOURSELF. 3. Sharp objects (like disposable glass pipets, cutting tools, broken glass, etc.) should be stored in a special “sharps” container. What is the most common lab accident? Most common lab accidents involve broken glass.

Keep your hands away from your face, eyes, mouth and body. CORROSIVES are chemicals that can corrode (melt or burn away) surfaces.

Clean up.

Stay put.

Handling living organisms Humane treatment Don’t touch until told to Wear protective gear Cultures = cells, tissues, or microorganisms Poisonous plants Working outside - dress appropriately

Notify your teacher if you have a medical condition (allergy, pregnancy, etc.)

Wear close-toed shoes, roll up sleeves, remove dangling jewelry, and tie back long hair.

Wear PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) at all times during the lab. Wear SAFETY GOGGLES over your eyes NOT on your head! Aprons Gloves Goggles

Last thing to do…wash hands.
