Amphibians Octavio’s Book Amphibians

Amphibians are vertebrates ( have backbones )

Over 80% of amphibians are frogs and toads, known as anurans

The white’s tree frog and European Fire-bellied toad are anurans

The anurans have long five-toed back legs and short four-toed front legs

Amphibians can not control their body temperature

The alpine newt and the salamander are amphibians

The newts and salamanders have short limbs and long tails

The northern red salamander and the tiger salamander are amphibians

Amphibians hatches as an aquatic larva with gills.

The larva then transforms into an adult having air-breathing lungs.

Amphibian are capable of living both on land and in water

Adult amphibians usually have smooth skin that…

…absorb oxygen from the air, helping them to breath

The red eye frogs have smooth skin

But some frogs and toads have thick skin …

…to help them survive in dried conditions

The golden toad has thick skin

All amphibians have glands in their skin that produce slime…

…to help keep it moist, some also produce poisonous substances.

The blue jeans dart frog and the dendrobates are poisonous frogs

All amphibians are hunters. many use their bulging eyes…

… to track their pray, swallowing in whole

Caecilians are the smallest group of amphibians

They look like worm, with blunt snout, tiny eyes and wide mouth

There are more that 6,000 species of living amphibians
