Definition Climate service - “The timely production and delivery of useful climate data, information, and knowledge to decision makers.” (NRC, 2001). ~~~~~ A Network of activities which maintains well-structured paths from observations, modeling, and research to usable information. (Pulwarty, 2004).

Creating an Effective Network Success requires connection Success requires connection Many levels of the production and delivery of information (Supply) Many levels of the production and delivery of information (Supply) Many levels of usefulness to decision makers (Demand) Many levels of usefulness to decision makers (Demand)

Missed Opportunity Matrix Answer these two questions simultaneously Answer these two questions simultaneously Where we find missed opportunities, we can take steps to reconcile supply and demand Where we find missed opportunities, we can take steps to reconcile supply and demand Does the decision maker need climate information? Does climate services research focus on the information needs of the decision maker?

Crafting climate services (CS): Where are we? 1. Pre- planning. Concepts and organization 2. Strategic Analysis. Needs and baseline conditions 3. Planning and Design. Management options and work plans 4. Implementation. Priority actions 5. Operation & Maintenance. Performance monitoring and adaptation to changes Strong analysis and planning is evident in CS but…. Weak implementation and monitoring experience to date (Pulwarty, 2004) The place for Reconciliation

Demand “Activities sensitive to weather and climate account for 42% of the USGDP.” (Dutton, 2002). “Activities sensitive to weather and climate account for 42% of the USGDP.” (Dutton, 2002).
