Physical and Chemical Properties and Changes By Jordan Parkinson
What are some Physical Properties? Appearance – Outward or visible aspect of a person or thing Color - A visual attribute of things that results from the light they emit or transmit or reflect Temperature - The degree of hotness or coldness of a body or environment Texture - The feel of a surface or a fabric Odor - The property or quality of a thing that affects, stimulates, or is perceived by the sense of smell Melting Point - The temperature below which a liquid turns into a solid Boiling Point - The temperature at which a liquid boils at sea level
Examples of Physical Property Appearance – The desk had round corners and a square top Color – The rainbow has many shades of color reflected from rain in the sun Temperature – The river was very cold when I felt it with my feet Texture – The shagged rug had a smooth and soft feel to it Odor – The skunk smelled so bad after it sprayed something near our camp Melting Point – The ice began to melt after taking it out of the freezer because the room temperature was 75 degrees Boiling Point – The water began to boil at about 212 degrees Fahrenheit
What are some Chemical Properties? Flammability - The quality of being easily ignited and burning rapidly Toxicity - The degree to which something is poisonous Oxidation - The combination of a substance with oxygen pH Indicator - A substance that indicates the degree of acidity or basicity of a solution through characteristic color Reactivity - The tendency of a substance to undergo chemical reaction, either by itself or with other materials
Examples of Chemical Property Flammability – The gas we used to start the fire ignited fast because it is extremely flammable Toxicity – The smoke in the air was extremely toxic because it hurt in our lungs when we breathed Oxidation – The nail began to rust after sitting in a bucket of water pH Indicator – The cherries are red due to their acidic level but would be blue to purple in a basic solution Reactivity – The plants in the front room grew faster than the plants in the TV room because the front room allows more direct sunlight to the plants
What are some Physical Changes? Physical Change - a change from one state (solid or liquid or gas) to another without a change in chemical composition Absorption of water into a towel Crumpling of a piece of paper Pulling copper into a thin wire (change of shape)
Physical Changes Con’t Cutting wood apart Tearing a piece of tin foil Breaking glass Deflating a basketball Cloud forming in the sky
What are some Chemical Changes? Chemical Change - A rearrangement of the atomic array of matter which results in a change of physical properties Burning of a log wood Oxidation – rusting or tarnishing Combustion Mixing chemicals
Chemical Changes Con’t Rotting of fruit Cooking rice Explosion of fireworks Lighting a match
Chemical Changes Con’t Roasting a marshmallow Adding food coloring to icing Frying a egg
