Year 4 Meet the Teacher

Maths Mental Maths Tests. Done on a weekly basis to develop mental arithmetic skills. Children expected to calculate in their heads and only use jottings. Let’s have a go!

Maths cont. Maths Makes Sense – Scheme we are using in year 4 for our maths teaching and learning. Some vocab to use at home: Same Value Different Appearance – used to compare numbers, especially fractions and decimals. EG: 1/10, 0.1,.1, tenth – all look different but their value of a tenth is the same.

Maths cont. Maths at home: try to include mental maths in everything you are doing. At the shops When you are cooking Doing the washing Going on journeys Always practice times tables!!

English - Reading Guided reading – every day in class. Children should be reading at least 3 x a week at home and getting signatures in their reading diary.

English - Reading Reading Comprehension Have a look at the Reading Comprehension example in your pack. Spend a bit of time discussing how you could support your child at home when they are reading to you.

English - Writing Writing takes many forms in year 4. By the end of the year the children will have written for a variety of purposes and done both fiction and non fiction writing. Usually do one piece of unaided, extended writing a week. Based on Mantle of the Expert

English - Writing Children need to use VCOP in all of their writing but we focus more on it during extended writing. V – Vocabulary C – Connectives O – Openers P - Punctuation

English - Writing Each term we will do some from our new scheme - literacy and language. Lots of reading and discussion leading up to a longer writing task. Lots of grammar.

English - Writing At home: Encourage your child to write for fun! Change different parts of a story – the beginning, the build up, the dilemma, the resolution or the ending. Give a piece of your writing and ask your child to improve it, using VCOP.

Any Questions? Don’t forget we are always available after school and you can phone to speak to us.
