Suzie Student Ms. Brauneis Eng II- 4 November 2, 2011 Ender’s Game Ch. 5 Evaluate why Ender must be isolated and why he can not have an easy way out. Paraphrase what Ender meant when he called himself a “Launchie”. Because if he is the one who will have to lead an army. There will be no one to help him if he calls. He can’t believe there is always out, because if he does then he will expect help to come but there will be none in war. “He can never come to believe that anybody will ever help him out, ever” (Card 38). Ender used the term “Launchie” to further describe himself as an outcast and how isolated he felt compared to the rest of the boys. “He was the only Launchie in that part of the room” (Card 45). “He noticed that the older boys were divided into groups, according to the uniforms They wore. Some with different uniforms were talking together, but generally the groups each had their own area. Launchies – their own group” (Card 41).

Suzie Student Ms. Brauneis Eng II- 4 November 2, 2011 Ender’s Game Ch. 5 Interpret why the I.F considers using Dap as a mother and not leaving the boys on their own to become independent. Infer why the game room interests Ender. They figure that if they have somebody that is nice to them it will help in the long run, and someone to help play the role mom. ‘’I’m the only person here, who is paid to be nice to you.”(Card 40) “if you get lost in the school…Just tell them your mother is Dap” (Card 40). He thinks the 2D games that all the other launchies are using are too childish for him he wants a challenge. “Ender walked past the two-dimensional games on video and began to study the games the bigger boys played, the holographic games with objects hovering in the air” (Card 45).

Suzie Student Ms. Brauneis Eng II- 4 November 2, 2011 Ender’s Game Ch. 5 Determine how Ender was quickly able to understand the game played by the older kids. Analyze how Ender’s hacking enables him to overthrow Bernard and his gang. Ender quickly understood how the computer game operated. “within an hour or so, it began to pall. Ender understood the regularities by then, understood the rules the computer was following, so that he knew he could always, once he mastered the controls, out maneuver the enemy” (Card 46). By Ender hacking the computer system, he was able to show the class that Bernard wasn’t as bad as he thought he was. “’Somebody’s been writing messages using my name.’ Bernard was sullen” (Card 52). “Bernard’s attempt to be ruler of the room was broken – only a few stayed with him now” (Card 53).

Suzie Student Ms. Brauneis Eng II- 4 November 2, 2011 Ender’s Game Ch. 5 Based off of the known facts, predict why Shen decided to sit next to Ender. Determine how Bernard is embarrassed. Shen decide to sit next to Ender because Ender stood up to Bernard, degrading him in front of everyone. “Bernard’s attempt to be ruler of the room was broken- only a few stayed with him now” (Card 53). Bernard was embarrassed when Ender “set up a file for a nonexistent student, whom he whimsically named God” (Card 49). “COVER YOUR BUTT. BERNARD IS WATCHING. – GOD” (Card 50). “Bernard went red with anger” (Card 50).
