The Residential Approach It is already here! Just pick it up!

Technology Penetration in New Homes Source: NAHBRC/CEA ( Penetration figures represent technologies offered as either standard or upgrades by builders).

Drivers for Broadband and Home Networks 1. Broadband Growth and Sharing 2. Online Gaming and Shopping 3. Digital Audio and Streaming Video 4. Home Security 5. Home Automation 6. Emerging Network Physical Layer Technology and Network Connectivity

Drivers Continued IP Telephony 8. Reducing Health Care Expenses 9. Using Intelligent Software (ie. UPnP) 10. Drive for Broadband Services by Service Providers

Broadband Definitions: The FCC has defined “broadband” or “high-speed” or “advanced” Internet services if it offers at least 200 Kbps in both directions (upstream and downstream).

Type of Installation Contractors used for Home Electronics As a relatively new labor category, custom installers rank just behind the more-established fields of security companies and electricians. Totals add up to more than 100 percent because many builders use more than one type of contractor. Source: NAHBRC/CEA

What will Dominate our Residence! The future holds much more -integrating building structure - detecting structural failures, corrosion, bursting pipes, etc………..

The Digital Revolution is Coming…

Definition of Intelligent Building Technologies “ The use of integrated technological building systems, communications and controls to create a building and its infrastructure which provides the owner, operator and occupant with an environment which is flexible, effective, comfortable and secure.” Source: Technology Roadmap for Intelligent Buildings (

Financial impacts/life cycle costs. Integrated design/build process. IBS reliability. Education and changing practices. Competing technologies. Standards/protocols are not interoperable. Challenges...

How to Integrate? Imperative # 1 An Integrated design team and process - dedicated to the integration notion! Integration should be implemented from inception to completion. The initial design stage is perceived as most critical to the process. The guidance of the System Integrator at this stage is indispensable!

Benefits of Integrated Systems... Better building access. Standardized infrastructure. Higher building/rental value. Consumption expenses decrease. Occupant/tenant control. Single control point.

CABA created the XML/Web Services (oBIX) Committee to look at using Internet standards for interoperable facility management in April, CABA moved the governance to OASIS (Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards). The goals are to move quickly and create non-binding guidelines - oBIX (Open Building Information Xchange) and eventually international standards. CABA XML/Web Services (oBIX) COMMITTEE
